Warning Signs During Pregnancy

warning signs

Written By: Cheryl Furer

During your pregnancy, your care provider will monitor your health and the well-being of your baby. If there are issues that arise, your care provider will give you all the information possible to make the best choices for yourself. Sometimes immediate issues can occur. The following are a list of danger signs that require immediate attention.

Call your provider immediately if:

  1. Persistent and severe nausea and vomiting. Although nausea and vomiting is common during the 1st trimester, when it is severe you could become dehydrated quickly. Also, any nausea and vomiting going into the 2nd and 3rd trimester should not be overly limiting to you. If possible, note the time of day or night, foods, and any other factors that make the nausea better or worse.
  2. Vaginal Bleeding. In the first trimester, this can be normal or could indicate a potential miscarriage. In the second and third trimesters, there may be other causes and further investigation may be necessary. When you notice it, note the color of the blood- bright red, dark, black, etc. and the quantity- a few drops, a gush, a steady stream, etc.
  3. Cramping. This could simply be stretching pains from the uterus, digestive upsets, or a more serious condition. It is especially concerning if the cramping also comes with bleeding.
  4. An outbreak of blisters in the vaginal, anal, or on the thighs. A culture should be obtained so that we can test for any viruses.
  5. Persistent and severe mid-back pain. This could indicate a kidney infection.
  6. Fever and Chills. Colds, the flu, and other infections can be especially harmful during pregnancy. Call me immediately, clear your schedule, and rest as soon as possible. Note the time the fever and/or chills started and any changes you are noticing with this infection.
  7. Swelling of your hands and face. This could be an allergic reaction or potentially preeclampsia.
  8. Severe headaches, blurry vision, or pain under the ribcage.
  9. Gush of fluid from the vagina. A small leak that has stopped may not be a problem, but contact me immediately.
  10. Regular uterine contractions before 37 weeks. Lie down and rest. Be sure to contact me.
  11. Cessation of fetal movement. Your baby does sleep, but if you have not had movement for more than a few hours there could be a problem. Try to eat something with some sugar in it, like juice or fruit. If there is still no movement, or you are feeling especially concerned, contact your provider immediately.

Go to the emergency room immediately if:

Severe pelvic or abdominal pain. This could indicate a tubal pregnancy or placental abruption.
